Dubrovnik cruise berths at a glance
| Terminal | Quay | Used by | Old Town access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gruž (Gruz) Cruise Terminal | Main commercial cruise berth | Most large ships — MSC, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Viking and others | Taxi 10–15 min to Pile Gate; port shuttles and Line 1A/1B buses in season; excursion coaches at terminal exit |
| Tender operations | Anchorage in Gruž Bay | Occasional overflow when berths are full or for very large vessels | Tender to Gruž area then taxi or shuttle to Old Town — add 30–45 minutes to your planning |
| Old Town harbour | Small-boat pier — not cruise berth | Lokrum ferries and excursion boats — passengers reach via taxi from Gruž | 10–15 min taxi from terminal to Old Town harbour for Lokrum and coastal departures |
Check your cruise app the night before — summer traffic on the road to Pile Gate can add 15–20 minutes to returns.
Where cruise ships dock in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik cruise ships dock at the Gruž (Gruz) commercial cruise terminal on the city's western harbour, about 2.5 km from Pile Gate — the main western entrance to the walled Old Town.
Unlike some Mediterranean ports where heritage sits an hour away, Dubrovnik's UNESCO core is genuinely reachable in 10–15 minutes by taxi. Peak season can see two or three ships sharing a single day — wall and cable car queues build accordingly.
Dubrovnik appears on Adriatic, Greek Isles and Eastern Mediterranean itineraries from April through October, with heaviest traffic June to September.
Getting from Gruž to Dubrovnik Old Town
Pile Gate is 2.5 km from Gruž terminal — roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi (€12–18) or 25–35 minutes walking along the waterfront promenade past Lapad.
Port shuttle buses and public Line 1A/1B services run toward Old Town in season. Excursion coaches and minivans meet passengers at the terminal exit with name boards or line flags.
Mount Srđ cable car lower station sits above the Old Town — reach via Pile Gate area then a short uphill walk. Lokrum ferries depart from Old Town harbour — taxi from Gruž first, not from the cruise terminal pier.
Facilities and practicalities
Gruž terminal offers toilets, seating, tourist information and a taxi rank outside the building. ATMs and larger shops sit closer to Old Town — withdraw euros on the ship if needed.
Currency is the euro. Croatian is the local language; English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Download offline maps — terminal Wi-Fi is unreliable.
Dubrovnik is compact and generally safe. Watch polished marble when wet and belongings in crowded Stradun when multiple ships are in port.
Return-to-ship timing
Confirm all-aboard time — usually 30–60 minutes before departure. Keep a 60–90 minute buffer beyond your expected travel time, especially returning from Old Town when wall or cable car queues run long.
Independent walkers should book a return taxi 90 minutes before all-aboard. Ship excursions carry delay guarantees; reputable independent operators track departure but will not wait if you separate from the group.
Tender operations require an earlier return — allow extra margin to queue for the tender boat back to your ship.
