Dubrovnik Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site enclosed by medieval walls that survived the 1667 earthquake and the 1990s siege. From Gruž port it is the essential anchor for almost every Dubrovnik port day.
Cruise ships dock at Gruž (Gruz) commercial cruise terminal, about 2.5 km east of Dubrovnik Old Town's Pile Gate. Taxis to the walls take 10–15 minutes; port shuttle buses and local services run in season; a waterfront walk takes 25–35 minutes. Build a 60–90 minute buffer before all-aboard — summer queues at the city walls and cable car can slow your return to the terminal.
Enter via Pile Gate (western) or Ploče Gate (eastern). The Stradun — the main marble promenade — runs 300 metres between the gates; side lanes climb to churches, monasteries and hidden courtyards. Most passengers cover the core in 2–3 hours before optional wall walks or cable car ascents.
Summer crowds peak 11:00–15:00 when multiple ships are in port. Morning arrivals should walk Old Town first, then walls or cable car. Evening departures allow a late-afternoon stroll when day-trippers thin.
