Stradun Walking Guide — Dubrovnik's Main Street from Cruise Port
Polished marble underfoot — the spine of the walled city from Pile to Ploče.
Distance
Stradun runs through Old Town centre — 2.5 km from Gruž to Pile
Travel time
10–15 min taxi or 25–35 min walk to Pile Gate
Time needed
45 minutes to 2 hours
The Stradun (Placa) is Dubrovnik's 300-metre marble promenade connecting Pile Gate to Ploče Gate. Every Dubrovnik port day passes through it — this guide helps you use the Stradun as orientation, not just a crowded corridor.
Cruise ships dock at Gruž (Gruz) commercial cruise terminal, about 2.5 km east of Dubrovnik Old Town's Pile Gate. Taxis to the walls take 10–15 minutes; port shuttle buses and local services run in season; a waterfront walk takes 25–35 minutes. Build a 60–90 minute buffer before all-aboard — summer queues at the city walls and cable car can slow your return to the terminal.
Walk east from Pile past Onofrio's Fountain and the Franciscan Monastery (Europe's oldest pharmacy still operating) toward the Bell Tower and Orlando's Column at Luža Square. Side lanes north and south hide churches, wine bars and residential courtyards tourists miss when they stay on the main axis.
Stradun cafés charge premium prices for the setting — locals drink in side-street konobas. Allow 45–60 minutes for the main axis plus one side-lane detour; longer if shopping for Croatian olive oil, lavender and filigree jewellery.
